Sferracavallo International Optimist Race: sail and explore Sicily

You don’t have to wait for summer to fall in love with Palermo’s coastline. From 5 to 8 December 2026, the Sferracavallo International Optimist Race returns to the bay, bringing young sailors from several countries together for four days of sailing near Palermo.

SIOR 2026: what has been officially confirmed?

Circolo Velico Sferracavallo has announced the fifth Sferracavallo International Optimist Race on 5–8 December 2026. The Italian Optimist Class Association (AICO) also lists it as an Open regatta organised by the Sferracavallo sailing club.

Entrants should consult the organisers for the notice of race, registration, sailing instructions and confirmed start times. The actual programme may change with the weather and sea conditions.

International youth sailing with a Sicilian backdrop

Optimist dinghies are small, yet the experiences they offer are anything but: learning to read the wind, making decisions and meeting people who share the same passion. SIOR adds an international dimension to this journey, bringing sailors, coaches and families together on the water.

Off the racecourse, Sferracavallo in December has a character of its own. Think colourful fishing boats, soft light over the Baia del Corallo, the outline of Capo Gallo and a leisurely meal by the sea. Spectators should note that visibility of individual races from land depends on the racecourse.

Plan your 5–8 December sailing trip

Getting here and dressing for the weather

Check the club’s latest updates and arrange boat and equipment transport in advance. Bus and rail links connect Sferracavallo with Palermo; verify service times for your travel dates. Pack a windproof jacket and warm layers for time spent outdoors by the sea.

Accommodation for sailing families

Palermo Mare Holidays is located at Via Torretta 7, 90147 Sferracavallo, Palermo, Sicily, Italy, around 50 metres from the sea. The Acquario Apartment has two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a private sea-view terrace. The Pescatore Apartment offers a bedroom, kitchen and living space. Couples can consider the Baia del Corallo Suite with its private terrace or the Rosa dei Venti Room.

Enjoy fibre Wi-Fi and a panoramic sea-view solarium. Private parking is available on request at an additional charge; airport transfers and hot-tub experiences are separately arranged extras.

Nature, seafood and a little more of Palermo

Between sailing commitments, stroll towards Barcarello or explore permitted routes in the Capo Gallo Nature Reserve from the Sferracavallo side, checking current access conditions. The village’s seafood trattorias offer a welcoming introduction to Sicilian cooking, from fresh local fish to traditional pasta dishes.

Festa dei Morti in Palermo 2026: Sweet Traditions and a Seaside Stay

A family tradition to approach with curiosity

You don’t have to wait until summer to fall in love with Palermo’s coast… A visit in late October or early November can combine time in the seaside village of Sferracavallo with a closer look at Palermo’s food and traditions. Festa dei Morti offers a different starting point for exploring: choose a local custom, then follow the questions it inspires.

In Palermo, 2 November connects remembrance of the dead with gifts for children, symbolically brought by loved ones who have passed away. Sweets associated with the occasion include frutta martorana, sugar figurines and tetù biscuits. For a visitor, these details provide an introduction to the celebration beyond simply choosing something to buy.

At a pastry counter, ask which preparations belong to the shop’s own family tradition. A short stop can become a conversation rather than another item on an itinerary. If you are travelling with children, invite them to choose a detail to look at: the shape of a sweet, a colour or a character represented in sugar.

Events announced for 2026

The city’s tourism portal lists Notte di Zucchero from 31 October to 2 November, the Festa dei Morti market in Piazza Castelnuovo from 29 October to 8 November, and the Fiera dei Morti at the Fiera del Mediterraneo from 27 October to 2 November.

Before planning your visit, check the official Festa dei Morti 2026 page and the organisers’ announcements. Opening times, admission charges and booking requirements need to be checked for your chosen activity.

A relaxed way to plan your visit

Choose one focus for your time in Palermo

Build the day around one event rather than trying to fit everything in. Leave room for a walk, a pastry stop and time to notice your surroundings. A shorter list of plans also makes it easier to adapt if the weather changes or you decide to spend longer somewhere.

Make space for Sferracavallo’s waterfront

Set aside another part of your stay for the village and the coast, conditions permitting. The contrast is the appeal: a cultural outing in Palermo followed by time beside the sea. Check the forecast and current transport options before setting out, rather than relying on assumed journey times.

Sicilian flavours and time by the sea

Make room for the small sensations of a holiday: soft marzipan, the scent of a pastry shop and the sound of waves on a waterfront walk. Spend an evening exploring Sferracavallo’s seafood cooking, asking restaurants about the day’s dishes. To balance food with nature, consider a walk towards Barcarello or a longer hike in Capo Gallo Nature Reserve. Choose a route that suits your fitness and check the weather, access arrangements and current rules before setting out.

Sferracavallo in Autumn: Barcarello and Capo Gallo

Bagni, snorkeling e bicicletta: cosa sapere

Dove dormire a Sferracavallo: Palermo Mare Holidays fronte mare
